All around the country, you will find many communities with at least one private golf course. While some people believe the only reason these courses exist is to exclude people, there are actually several authentic reasons for the existence of these limited access golf courses. Here are a few examples.

First, there is a need for persons who take golf very seriously to have a place they can play without distractions. Public courses by their nature are open to people with all levels of skill and interest in the game. This can be frustrating to someone waiting for the next hole to open while a group takes their own sweet time. Private courses tend to be more formal with the game, and that ensures the serious minded golfer that he or she will be able to progress around the course at a reasonable pace.

Second, there is often a difference in the quality of the private course for golf versus a public course. A private course may be designed with some interesting challenges at various points. Since public courses are meant to be for people who may only play golf once in a great while, the challenges present at each hole along the way tend to be more simplistic. While that is great for the casual golfer, it presents no real attraction for the avid fan of golfing. The challenges of the more robust private course will be more to his or her liking.

Last, there is the issue of maintenance. A public course for golf will receive adequate attention, but not the level of care that will be found with a private one. Because it is privately funded, details that may or may not be considered important with a public course will be considered absolutely necessary. This will include landscaping, repair of any damage to the course, and year round maintenance of the greens, even in colder weather.

While golfing is for anyone who wants to play, persons that take golfing seriously as a sport often prefer to create their own conclaves where they can practice the sport as they see fit. As long as this is true, we will have the concept of the private golf course.
